The color coated earplugs were designed to be inserted in one of two directions, based on combat conditions or training exercises.

Instructions stated to insert the earplug’s yellow tip into the ears during gunfire.  On the opposite end, the earplug’s green tip was to be inserted in to the ear during exposure to fighter jet noise.
